Tintoretto, The Last Supper

1570
Oil on canvas
Church of Santo Stefano, Venice, Italy

Jesus literally breaks bread at the near end of the table. The wine glass at his right is curiously empty. At the far end of the table is what may be a small roast lamb, next to the elbow of the man in red. Only eleven Apostles are pictured, as if Judas had already left, but in the gospels he is present for the breaking of the bread.

As in his other paintings of the Last Supper, Tintoretto includes the poor and the infirm (and even a dog and a cat).
